The vibrant spirit of HiCo Hall was set ablaze with the soulful tunes of Ronnie and The Redwoods. Backstage, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Ronnie Rowe, the soulful voice behind the band, for an exclusive interview.
The Origin Story
Six years ago, Ronnie Rowe made the big move to Lubbock and found himself drawn to the local music scene. It all started through open mic nights at Blue Light, where destiny intervened. “I ended up getting a job there working the front door with my bassists and we decided to start a band,” Ronnie explains. From acquaintances working together at Blue Light to forming relationships with local talent, and a chance connection through a professor at South Plains College; the story of Ronnie and The Redwoods is one of fate, friendship, and a shared passion for music.
“We stick to roots but do it with our own flare,” Ronnie emphasized. The band’s commitment to their craft is evident as they take the stage. “These songs span from when I was 19 years old to now. It’s cool to see how I’ve changed through the years. I always want to change and grow, and my music should do that too. Otherwise, it will get boring.”
Ronnie describes their lyrics as a mix of true sadness and hopefulness. The band aims to offer a unique perspective on life, addressing themes of love, anger, and the duality of humanity. Ronnie expressed his love for songwriting, emphasizing the importance of questioning and reflecting on the world around us.
Ronnie explained a laid-back approach as the discussion shifted to preparing for live performances, especially at a renowned venue like HiCo Hall. “We don’t do a huddle or anything like that,” he chuckled. Instead, the band focuses on harmonies, avoiding overthinking and keeping the preparation akin to any other intimate stage. “Just relax,” he advised, emphasizing the simplicity of their backstage routine.
Reflecting on successful live performances, Ronnie shared a personal journey of sobriety. The band, now two years into this transformative phase, has found a new appreciation for their craft.
“Now that we’re not doing that, we get a lot more done, have a lot more fun, and can actually enjoy it.”
Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome, Ronnie extended an invitation to audiences to come with an open mind and enjoy the experience. The simplicity and authenticity of Ronnie Rowe’s words backstage foreshadowed the magic awaiting the audience, making it a night to remember in the heart of Hico.
