It was a Happy Phillip Face Friday at HiCo Hall on December 8th, as we prepared for the legendary Old 97’s to take the stage. If you happened to miss the show – no worries! In this exclusive interview, the band shares their thoughts on Hico, holiday traditions, longevity secrets, and glimpses into their personal lives.
Old 97’s
“You know, the last time we ate out together was in Hico,” Murry Hammond reflects warmly on a memory of eating chicken fried steaks with his dad. Hico has a unique way of creating special moments for those who pass through, for Murry and the rest of Old 97’s, special would be an understatement.
The venue, in particular, earned high praise for its thoughtful attention to detail and spectacular sound system. The proximity of a disc golf course further cements the idea that if they were to settle down in the Texas countryside, Hico might just be their destination of choice.
As the holiday season unfolds, the band shared their hopes for a white Christmas and revealed the cherished traditions they look forward to each year. From hiding presents from their adult children until Christmas morning to decking the halls with an inflatable or two, the Old 97’s find joy in the simple pleasures of the season, especially when it involves spending time with family.
Spearheaded by Murry and Rhett, the band discussed their favorite tradition: handwritten lyrics. Each holiday season, fans are able to purchase personalized sheet music of their favorite Old 97’s songs. This endeavor was born out of the unpredictable nature of a musician’s income and has now become a sweet and ever-changing experience. Portions of proceeds are donated to a charity of their choosing, helping to spread the cheer to those in need.
As the band approaches 30 years since the release of their first studio album “Hitchhike to Rhome,” they reflect on the “secret sauce” to their longevity—compatible temperaments, shared humor, and, above all, a deep brotherly love. Despite living in different states since 1996, they emphasize the importance of forgiveness, trust, and choosing to stay together, likening their journey to a lasting marriage.
“There are exit ramps constantly that you could take and it could fall apart. We’ve chosen to stay together and chosen to forgive each other and work to earn each other’s trust and love, and it’s worked out. We’ve been really lucky.”
Pride resonates as the Old 97’s recount their experiences of this past year. 2023 came with many impactful moments but the one that takes the cake is the completion of their European tour, a feat that had been a long-time goal for the band. Grateful for the opportunity, they express their joy in bringing their music to international audiences and building on the momentum in the years to come.
Before taking the stage, the band acknowledges the uniqueness of Hico Hall and extends heartfelt congratulations to the venue. They encourage support from the community and express a desire to return, affirming that the hall is truly special.
The Old 97’s leave us with a sense of warmth, humor, and a shared love for music, family, and the journey that keeps them rolling like the iconic Rolling Stones. With a promise to return, they bid farewell, leaving us eagerly awaiting their electrifying return.
